Let me tell you a story ...

With Ruin just being released I wanted to do something special for my fans. Some may have already read the book, some may have not, but know that I am grateful for every one of you.

So today, I want to tell you a little story.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl. Her heart and mind so big, she dreamt of scary monsters and talking crocodiles laughing with elephants. When she awoke, she could barely tell the difference between the real world and the one in her dreams.
When she was six, she picked up a pen and began to write words. She never stopped. She fell in love with the curls, the swishes, the language, the communication. Even though her teachers scolded her for ruining the sheet of paper by writing with her left hand instead of her right. She didn't care.
Her mind told her to write, and so she did.
She wrote stories about crocodiles and elephants laughing and talking. Her mommy even made little booklets of the pink and blue papers she wrote on, slapped together with glue and rope.
Her first little book.
The first of many yet to come.

She grew older, and so did her mind, and the stories mounted up into the sky.
During the day she'd dream of the stories she'd lived through the night before.
Dreams and reality started to mix, to the point where her mind floated off, far away from the people close to her. In the car, she would stare at the clouds, her mind in a world filled with magic and flying monsters. In class, she would dream of ways to escape the world around her and jump into the one she'd created with just her thoughts.
The stories never stopped, and so she began penning them down.
One by one, they poured out of her.
They needed to escape.
Stories about girls discovering their super power and fighting monsters.
Stories about a companionship travelling the world.
Stories about first love and finding a soulmate.
Stories about a distant future.
Stories.
So many, they seemed to never end.
Her teachers used to ask, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
And she used to tell them, "I want to be a teacher, like you." But she only said that because her daddy was one, and because she didn't know there could be a different answer.
But when she was older ... she changed her mind.
She showed her mom her writings, who was always proud. It gave her the courage to tell more people, and she said to everyone, "I'm going to be a writer."
Most people would commend her and smile, but only the grown-ups. Her classmates laughed, despite her insistance. They even talked about her behind her back, saying how stupid it was for her to believe in silly dreams. She kept writing, despite being told by everyone it couldn't be done.
But she persisted. She would become the next JK Rowling.
You see, this little girl always had a thing for books. No wonder, she loved to write them too, so it was only natural she devoured them too.
But then she also knew JK Rowling was someone who lived in the UK. Someone who spoke English.
She did not.
So she was determined to learn how to write all her stories in English.
It wasn't hard, because when she was younger, she used to have an American nanny who taught her a lot of words. Somehow, the language had been ingrained in her brain, and she never forgot.
However, writing in your native language is always easier than a second one.
She showed her teachers her hard work, and some complimented her for it, and told her to continue. So she did. She wrote and wrote until one day ... one day, she realized, she was sixteen, and she needed to do something after school.
Something. Besides writing.
Because you see ... writing was not a job that could earn you money. And money makes the world go round. You can't live without it.
That's what her mom always told her.
Just like her mom always told her that writing can never really be a job.
Because, let's face it ... who in the Netherlands (a blip of a country on a map so large) ever becomes famous enough to earn a decent living from writing stories?
None.
So the girl gave up on writing and soon enrolled in college, taking up communication & social media classes so her second love (computers) might be her salvation. She forgot about her stories and put them aside, stuffed away in a corner of her computer where she wouldn't look for a long time, because they were burnt up dreams.
Dreams that she never knew she'd revisit one day.
One day.

One day, about three months before she'd graduate, she talked to her boss at her internship, and he told her the most striking thing.
"You love stories a lot, don't you?"
"Yeah."
"Then why don't you write?"
"Because ... I can't make that my job." She laughed.
"Yes, you can."
"No." She frowned.
"Yes." He smiled. "You can. You only gotta believe. Just do it."
"Just do what?"
"Just go for it. If you want to write, just write. If you want to publish it, publish it. Why not? What's stopping you? No one. No one should be able to stop you, not even you."
She opened her mouth, but failed to find an answer.
Nothing.
Nothing was exactly right. Nothing was stopping her.
It was all she ever needed to hear.
So she finished her work with as an intern, went home, and started up her computer. She wrote and wrote until her graduation, until she had so many stories in her mind and on paper she couldn't ignore it any longer.
She was about to publish them under a newly made-up pen name.
Screw the naysayers.
Screw the dreams.
It didn't matter if she wouldn't become the next JK Rowling. If her English was bad. If her stories wouldn't even be read.
Because no matter what ... She would continue.
She would push on and on until death.
Because that is what people do when they have dreams.

They. Never. Give. Up.

When she sold her first book, she was ecstatic. On the moon.
And then another one. And another.
The first month was so awesome.
But the one after that was even better.
And all the months following the first were even more unbelievable.
And then came the moment when she realized people did actually read her stories. That people actually liked them. That they wanted more.
And more ... and more.
And she never, ever stopped writing ... with a smile on her face.

To this day she feels like a fraud in her own skin, selling stories under a pen name in a language that's not her own, but she will push on, never quitting, never giving up, because this is what she loves. This is who she is.
A writer. A lover of stories, no matter the language. No matter the age.
She's now twenty-five and soon to be married, and she couldn't be any happier and more grateful than she is right now.

And for that I know that I am forever indebted to you, my fans.

The end.

Excerpt of upcoming book!

BLISSFUL VOL. 1 COMING SOON!

I'm writing a hot new story that features a curvy depressed songwriter named Amy and a sexy & sweet but sad Rancher named Jack. It's going to have a lot of characters and will probably be a longer serial. Not sure how many parts yet, but I've got a lot in mind. And guess what? This one has the male POV, too!
I'm so excited to share this with you!! Gah, can't wait 'till you guys read it :)

Anyway, here's an excerpt:

Jack opens the door and steps out of the car. Frowning, I look around. I thought we still had to drive, why is he getting out? It’s already dark outside, but I clearly see one light burning up ahead. Then I see the house attached to the light, a few yards away. It’s a large wooden home, looking like it could use a fresh coat of paint. Next to it is a huge barn, and tools are lying all over the place. We’re already here?
“You gettin’ out or do you want to camp out in my car?” he says, leaning over to look at me through the window.
He walks away toward the house. I hurry to get out and slam the door a little too hard maybe, because he turns his head to me. I walk to my own car and haul out enormous suitcase I brought.
“Wow, you brought a suitcase? You must be serious on camping out here.”
“Oh, damn you and your jokes,” I say, and he chuckles, amused at my troubles. Yeah, you go ahead and laugh. After you’re done with my car, I’m out of here …
Walking back to the house is difficult. The ground beneath me is soggy and my shoes sink into the mud. I tiptoe to a spot where there are some tiles.
Gazing at me, he laughs and shakes his head. “Afraid of a little dirt?”
“I’m a girl and I’m from the city. What do you expect?” I say with my brows furrowed.
“Nothing, actually.” Leaning against the open door of the house, he just stands there and looks at me.
I gape at him. Did he just actually say that. “Excuse me? Are you implying something?”
He smirks. “Well you said it yourself, you’re a girl from the city. Not much to expect when it comes to farm life.”
He’s just provoking me! Well, I can take him. “Yeah, well I think I can handle a little muck.” I snort.
I jump across a pile of mud, but lose my balance on the slippery ground. My butt lands exactly in the puddle.
Jack bursts out into laughter and it makes me furious. My outfit is ruined and now my hands, legs and butt are covered in wet sand and god knows what else is on this ground. Jack strides toward me and holds out his hand. “Does your highness want a hand?”
Squinting, I’m pondering whether to jerk his legs so he drops, too, but I bet I’m not strong enough to make it happen. Plus, it’s rather rude, since he wants to help me. Sighing loudly, I take his hand and let him pull me up. My shoe is caught in the mud, and I stumble forward, right into his chest.
His broad arms are around me, keeping me from falling again. I look up to meet his surprised eyes. My heart makes a jump, feeling his body so close to mine. Oh, shit, this is so wrong.
I twist away from his arms and lean backward to get on my feet again. Clearing my throat, I try to make the burning feeling in my throat go away.
Jack purses his lips and frowns, looking confused. For an instance it almost looks as if he’s affected by our touch, too.
Then he turns back into his playful self again. “Can’t even stand on your own two feet, huh.”
He wipes his muddy hands on his jeans, like it’s no big deal to make them dirty.
I roll my eyes. “Give me a break. It’s dark outside, I can’t see a thing and the road here is like a sinkhole.”
Jack laughs. “Can’t argue with you on that. Well, better get you cleaned up.” He grabs my suitcase, turns around and hauls it to the door, expecting me to follow him, I guess.

Doing It Free (#3, Doing It) - available now!

Doing It Free is finally out!

Yes, you heard it right, the conclusion to the hot and steamy Doing It series is available now! I finally published it on 08/31/2013 and I'm happy with the results.

For all you lovers of erotic romance, here is a sneak peek:

Excerpt

The next day, I brought the most daring outfit I could find to work and hid it in the pantry until I got on my break. My boss was out getting some lunch, so I had plenty of time to put on a different set of clothes and hop over to the gas station Finn was at, since it was only a few blocks away.
In my black pantyhose, covered by a short, pink skirt, laced bra popping up under a tight fitted tee, I entered the shop. The doorbell rang and Finn looked up. The comic in his hand dropped on the counter, his eyes widened and his mouth opened slowly.
I grinned. “Hey there, pretty boy,” I said, and I strutted forward, flaunting my goods.
“What are you doing, Grace?”
I laughed and came closer, putting my boobs on the counter as I bent over. While swallowing and gazing at my chest, Finn tried to back away, but I grabbed his shirt and pulled him in for a sloppy kiss.
I sucked on his lip and ignored his disapproving noises. I chuckled when he managed to slip away, licking my lips. “What’s the matter, don’t like it?”
The left side of his lips curled up into a cheeky smile. “Oh, I do, but it’s safer this way.”
I chortled. “Oh, I bet.” I looked around for something I could eat for lunch and decided to go with the vegetarian salad I saw lying in the cooling section. “I’d like one of those,” I said, pointing at the salad.
“What? This? Is that all you’re going to eat?” he said, grabbing the salad.
“Yeah, it’s more than enough for me.”
“Grace …” he sighed and rested his hands on the counter. “We’ve already been through this … please just eat some more. Don’t be afraid of food. You look beautiful.”
I rolled my eyes. “I know, Finn. Thanks. I’m okay, I’m not stressing over it anymore like I used to. I can eat perfectly fine now.”
“But just a tiny bit,” he said.
“Yeah.” I put the salad in my bag before he could snatch it away again and placed the money on the counter.
He kept his eyes on me, brows furrowed, lips pursed, as if he still wasn’t convinced.
“Oh, come on Finn, stop worrying about me. I’m fine. Perky and peachy as ever,” I said with a cheesy smile and he laughed at me.
I turned around and started walking away again, but then I remembered my plan and I wanted to entice him just a little bit more. I knocked over a bag of chips that was on the edge of a shelf and said, “Oops!”
Bending over, with my knees straight and my ass pointing at Finn, I grabbed the bag and slowly came up again. I was sure he’d seen my transparent panties. Turning my head was the best thing I did since I came here. The expression on his face was priceless.
I chuckled and blew him a kiss in the air. “See you tonight, Finn.”

Excerpt:

I looked around my new dorm room and took in all the tiny details. There was another bed opposite to mine and above it a gigantic poster of a hunky man. Thongs and bras lay scattered on the floor and the few books that were on a desk in the corner were covered in dust. Under the window stood an ashtray, the cigarette on it still burning.
Kevin came inside, hauling my suitcase and dropped it onto the bed, huffing. “Is this it?” he asked.
I turned around to look at his sweaty face, his dark, curly hair all over the place.
“Yeah, thanks Kev, I really appreciate all your help,” I said and pecked him on the cheek.
He blushed and smiled. “Don’t mention it.” He looked around the room and his eyes locked onto the cigarettes.
“So she smokes.”
“Guess so, yeah. I’m thinking of asking her to do it somewhere else, but I’m the new one here, so maybe I should just suck it up. I mean, I don’t want to spoil it with her before these four years are over. I have to sleep next to her the next couple of years, so it might be better if we’d become friends.”
“As long as you don’t forget about me,” Kevin said.
I chuckled. “Of course not, Kev.” I placed my hand on his shoulder. “You’re my best friend. Always will be.”
His lip twitched. “Yeah, I’ll always be here for you when you need me, especially to tow your luggage or get some dudes out of your face.” He grinned.
I poked him and laughed. “You’re more than just a great help, Kev. Come on, you know that.” I winked.
“Yeah, yeah, I know.”
“Besides, we’ve always been together, you and me, being neighbors back in town and now in this dorm too. It’s just too good. Always gonna be me and you and me against the world, Kev.” I gave him a friendly punch in the shoulder and he drew back, letting me pretend that I was strong. “Remember that time when I was being followed by that creepy kid from across the road and you stood there to protect me? God, I’ll never forget that.”
“Oh please,” Kevin rolled his eyes. “Don’t remind me of that. Not again.”
“You were so brave,” I said and muffled a laugh.
“Wasn’t so brave after I was lying on the ground with a bloody nose.” Kevin turned around.
“Hey, but that kid didn’t harass me anymore and that was all because of you.” I swung my arms around his neck. “You’re always there for me and that’s why I like you.”
He turned his face toward me and smiled.
Then a girl with curly, long red hair came inside, gazing at her cell phone and stood, just before she bumped into us.
“Oh, hi!” she said and waved.
I smiled an awkward smile and Kevin signaled to the door. I dropped my arm and Kevin walked past the girl.
“So you’re my new roommate then?” she asked. “Awesome. I’m Becky.” She gave me a firm handshake.
“Emily,” I said.
“And who’s that?” she pointed at Kevin without turning around. “Your boyfriend?”

Internal Dialog quirkiness

So recently I've been reading and critiquing other people's works in exchange for the same. I often come across mistakes that are cringe-worthy to say the least, but sometimes also find mistakes that are easily looked over, because they're not actually mistakes, but more style problems.

For instance, a writer put his internal dialog in italics, but made it very narrative, instead of real thought patterns coming through on the pages.

Example: Danger alert! Panic mode on.

I know what the writer is trying to do, which is create tension for the reader, but this is not an internal dialog at all. One does not think like that. Do you? Do you think in terms of 'Danger!' and 'Alert' and 'Mode on' in your head? I don't.

Regular thought patterns are usually either questions or judgemental statements. People think in either of these 2 categories:
  • Question (i.e. What is he doing? Why is she here? etc.)
  • (Judgemental/emotionally loaded) statements or ideas (i.e. I don't like this. This is stupid. He looks amazing!)

There isn't actually any other internal dialog going on in your brain apart from those two. Sure, you can talk to yourself in your head, but it still falls into either categories. For example: What should I do today? I could go swimming. No, wait, I hate water. Nevermind. <- now if you read closely, you can see the first is a question, the second is a statement/idea, the latter ones judgmental statements.

In your books, you want your characters to be as close to a regular human as possible, even if they have magical powers. It doesn't matter what they are, but they need to have human thought patterns and human traits and emotions.

Why?
Because people want to relate to your characters. Books don't stick if people can't sympathize with your characters. This is a plain fact, for something to be successful, you need to engage people. So stick to these two categories and you'll be fine on the inner dialog part ;)

Anyway, that's it for today's rambling :)

Kisses!

To share or not to share

So I just posted 2 chapters of Raveled by You on Wattpad, and I must say, I'm bouncing up and down in my chair right now. The thought of people reading my insanely explicit story gets under my skin.

Also, I'm still not quite sure how much I should be sharing with the world yet. I want you all to read my book, but I don't want it to be all for free. Still thinking about how I'm going to handle this.

Raveled by you is part of a series called Enflamed and I'm planning to create four stories (if not more) within this series. I'm not sure whether or not the first one should be free, that also depends on how long it takes for me to publish the second one of course. Just pondering about it :)

Anyway, I also put it up on Authonomy, just to check the waters, see if there's any interest. I want to spread my roots, see where my readers lie, track 'em down and chase 'em with my book, hoping they'll read it.

Better jump in and see where it goes, right? Can only go up from the bottom :P
